inventory management systems
Unlike backup, the primary aim of archiving is not to create copies of data for disaster recovery but instead to transfer original data for long retention in an archive system. This takes place either directly through an application or through a special archiving process. According to the reference architecture for archive systems, the archiving process is a service of a DMS (layer 2). The inventory management systems archiving process transfers data from the application computer’s primary storage to archive storage. To improve the retrieval of the data, the archiving process can also index the data and provide search functions. The archiving process provides access to the archived data; this access comes either directly from the original application or from a special archive application.
